Tuning
The string closest to what you play lights up on its own. Tap one to hold it there.
Reference pitch
440Hz
440 is concert pitch and what almost every record is at. Move it only if you are playing with something already tuned elsewhere.
Getting a steady reading
- Play one string at a time and let it ring. A full strum has no single pitch to lock on to.
- Pick near the bridge rather than over the soundhole — the reading settles faster.
- Somewhere quiet helps. Fans, traffic and a television all fight for the microphone.
- Wound low strings take a moment to speak. Give the needle a second before you turn the peg.
- Always come up to the note. If you are sharp, drop below it and rise back — the string holds better.
